The Cosmos are natives of Mexico, Guatemala and Costa Rica. Cosmos is the formal genus and common name of the flowers. In Ancient Greek, kósmos or κόσμος means world order or harmony. Botanist Antonio Jose Cavanilles (1745 -1804) named the flower Cosmos because of its evenly placed petals. The Cosmos are great for creating garden habitats for birds, butterflies and honey bees. They are drought tolerant once established. In overly rich soil these flowers grow too tall and are unable to stabilize themselves. They need to be protected from strong winds. However, these flowers love to dance in a gentle breeze displaying beauty in motion with their flowing petals.
The Cosmos represent order and harmonious motion. They are creators of caring community and nurturing homes and don’t require riches for happiness. They are creative, free-spirited, and love to dance.
